About

David Matthews and Peter Sheppard Skærved have been collaborating on a series of works for violin for many years now, in a partnership that has resulted in over 30 works, from string quartets to many pieces for violin alone. Matthews sets Sheppard Skærved formidable technical challenges, and Sheppard Skærved surprises Matthews by finding ways of overcoming the difficulties in his path. Behind all the pyrotechnics, this collaboration is generating one of the largest, and most musically rewarding, body of compositions for solo violin by any living composer. The range of reference in this music is wide, from Australian magpies and European songthrushes, via an Alpine ranz des vaches, to Three Chants, where the violinist is required to whistle and sing as he plays.

Peter Sheppard Skærved has worked with a huge range of contemporary composers, but is also deeply involved with the music of the past: one project currently underway brings together 200 unknown works from the 17th century. His work with museums has resulted in long-term projects at institutions including the Metropolitan Museum, New York City, the Victoria and Albert Museum and the British Museum – a recent commission took him to Svalbard/Spitzbergen. Peter is the only living violinist to have performed on the violins of Ole Bull, Joachim, Paganini and Viotti. Peter is the founder and leader of the Kreutzer Quartet and the artistic director of the ensemble Longbow, has written widely and is a gifted artist. Viotti Lecturer at the Royal Academy of Music, he was elected Fellow there in 2013.
