Andriessen started rather late as a composer of orchestral music. His first symphony was sketched from 1920-1930, the movements are closely linked thematically and culminate in a powerful apotheosis.
The Variations and Fugue on a theme of Johann Kuhnau is one of Andriessen’s best known works and is comprised of psychological interpretations of the theme rather than virtuosic displays – a different approach but with remarkable results.
