Berlage Saxophone QuartetAbout
The four young musicians take us on an enthralling and virtuosic journey around the world, from Spain by way of France to Norway, then eastward to Russia, the Czech Republic and Hungary, and finally with a grand leap to Argentina – always in quest of masterpieces of popular inspiration, the best of which have been brought together on this Super Audio CD.
Featured works range from Grieg’s Wedding Day in Troldhaugen to Piazzolla’s demanding Tango nuevo and then on to jazz études by Erwin Schulhoff influenced by the Charleston and blues. The Russian 'Shoulder-Blade Dance' by Farkas and Ligeti’s Bagatelles, in the original set for wind quintet, certainly represent a high point, and so does Pierné’s Introduction et Variations, one of the rare original compositions for saxophone quartet.
