Christopher Allsop (organ)About
Volume 18 in Regent’s popular ‘English Cathedral’ Series, features the 2008 Kenneth Tickell Quire organ at Worcester Cathedral - our second visit to Worcester in the ‘English Cathedral’ series, and our first solo organ disc on this magnificent new instrument. It is played by Christopher Allsop, Assistant Director of Music of Worcester Cathedral since 2004, in his dèbut solo organ recording.
The organ is put through its paces in a appealing, wide-ranging and immensely colourful programme of off-the-beaten track French, British, German and Russian music, including Christopher Allsop’s own transcription of Shostakovich’s riotous Festive Overture, a short piece by a former Director of Music at the Cathedral, Donald Hunt, Tomkins’ Trifle, in honour of his predecessor, Thomas Tomkins, and four delightful pieces by German composer Hugo Distler.
In his final year at school, Christopher Allsop held the Organ Scholarship at St Martin-in-the-Fields, Trafalgar Square, before spending a gap year as Organ Scholar at St George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle. He then spent three years as Organ Scholar at Trinity College, Cambridge, reading Music.
After a year teaching for the University Music Faculty and Assistant Organist at Great St Mary's, Cambridge, Christopher moved to Birmingham in 1997 where he was Assistant Organist of the Cathedral and Organist of the Blue Coat School, Edgbaston. He also taught at Birmingham Conservatoire, and regularly played for various local choirs, including Ex Cathedra and Birmingham Bach Choir. He was appointed Assistant Director of Music at Worcester Cathedral in 2004.
