Sergey Zhilin’s TrioAbout
Sergey Zhilin absorbed many achievements of world pianism: he learned a lot from Oscar Peterson, Erroll Garner and Art Tatum, all of this mixed with a solid foundation of Russian piano music (Sergey Rachmaninov). Zhilin possesses a variety of skills and techniques from powerful large-scale elements (octave and chord passages) to exquisite small-scale vignettes.
Sergey is a master of intricate patterns and colourful touches who is able to resort to tempo variation (slow to fast) and sound nuances (fortissimo to pianissimo). But what matters most is not the technique, but the fact that the musician who has a multitude of the so-called 'standards' at his disposal, made a courageous step towards national music and demonstrated its unlimited potential for its modern interpretation.
The Seasons (Yury Markin’s arrangement) demonstrates that the idea of 'classic music in jazz' is still alive and capable of producing unexpected results. In this project, everything new and unusual is generated as if from the inside of the music. A new harmonization of Tchaikovsky’s themes becomes possible with the help of harmonious language of late romanticism and music of the 20th century enriched by jazz culture, and not because the musicians are just using standard jazz chords.
Waltz of the Flowers, the only piece that does not belong to The Seasons, appears the most surprising. A combination of different piano styles, including stride, produces a slightly ironic effect. This could have happened if Tchaikovsky suddenly decided to play the piano together with Scott Joplin in a saloon somewhere in St Louis or Chicago – but in 2014.
Sergey Zhilin's Trio:
- Sergey Zhilin (piano)
- Pavel Protasov (double bass)
- Leonid Gusev (drums)
