Simon RattleAbout
Between 1980 and 1998 Simon Rattle conducted no less than 934 concerts with the CBSO. Together they performed works by many 20th-century composers, as well as established favourites, and gave a total of 16 world premieres.
Rattle also made 69 recordings for EMI with the orchestra. This box brings together that recorded legacy, which includes pieces by composers pivotal to his work, such as Mahler, Sibelius and Szymanowski, as well as some of the new compositions he championed - Nicholas Maw’s Odyssy, Mark Anthony Turnage’s Momentum, Three Screaming Popes and Drowned Out, and Thomas Adès’ Asyla.
'I do believe that there are certain things - such as human discourse, friendship and music - that are meant to be live', Rattle told The Daily Telegraph in 1999. 'To be limited to recordings is like choosing snapshots of your children over the children themselves.' His approach to recording with the CBSO was to try and re-create the energy, spontaneity and living quality of a concert performance.
'We try now to do more and more straight performances in the recording studio, with as few re-takes as possible', he told Nicholas Kenyon during the recording of Mahler’s Resurrection Symphony in 1986. Later, he would come to favour recordings based wholly on live performances - 'You need to hear the rough edges.'
Rattle’s discs with the CBSO are snapshots not just of a living relationship between conductor and orchestra, but of an on-going process of artistic exploration.
That process begins with a series of major statements of intent: the first British recording of Janácek’s Glagolitic Mass - one of the high points of Rattle’s first full season in Birmingham, recorded barely five months after his first concert as principal conductor - and only the second recording ever made of Britten’s War Requiem. As the orchestra that gave its premiere in 1962, the CBSO has a unique performance tradition in this work.
A series of shorter Britten works signalled a determination to widen the canon: Rattle had conducted (incredibly) the world premiere of Britten’s American Overture just six months before recording it in early 1984. He was to have conducted the UK premiere of the equally rare 'Occasional Overture' in October 1983, had the birth of his son Sacha not intervened: Rattle’s mentor John Carewe covered for the new dad.
Elise Ross, then Rattle’s wife, had already featured on his September 1982 recording of Kurt Weill’s The Seven Deadly Sins, the first to use Weill’s original keys. 'Rattle really appreciates the colour and wit', wrote Opera magazine.
