The earliest of the new batch is a perennial favourite: RCA’s 1960 Rome recording of Otello, conducted by Verdi authority Tullio Serafin. BBC Music Magazine’s reviewer proclaimed it his “preferred version and benchmark recording”, while The Penguin Guide states:
“No conductor is more understanding of Verdian pacing than Serafin and, with sound that hardly begins to show its age, this presents two of the finest solo performances on any Otello recording of whatever period: the Iago of Tito Gobbi has never been surpassed for vividness of characterization and tonal subtlety; while the young Jon Vickers, with a voice naturally suited to this role, was in his prime as the Moor. Leonie Rysanek is a warm and sympathetic Desdemona in one of her very finest recorded performances.”
