The two works - Prélude à l'histoire de Tristan and No-ja-li ou Le Palais du silence - were left unfinished when the composer died in 1918. They have since been completed and orchestrated by Robert Orledge, a leading expert on French music, and were performed in public for the first time in Cardiff in March 2015 as part of the Philharmonia Orchestra's City of Light festival.
These exciting new discoveries are juxtaposed with the UK premiere of Jolivet's beguiling song-cycle Poèmes intimes with baritone soloist Jeremy Huw Williams.
The title City of Light is borrowed from the Philharmonia Orchestra's landmark international festival of French music. Partnership between the Philharmonia Orchestra and Cardiff University School of Music, with Dr Caroline Rae as Series Advisor to City of Light, resulted in a series of Cardiff events, including the world and UK premiere performances of these works by the Cardiff University Symphony Orchestra.
This CD, the second collaboration between Prima Facie Records and Cardiff University, also features the world premiere recording of a new work by South African composer Robert Fokkens, a lecturer in composition at the Cardiff University School of Music. Ukuhamba kukufunda – To Travel is to Learn is an exploration of identity on both personal and cultural levels.
The Cardiff University School of Music is a lively and ambitious centre dedicated to research, composition and performance. Cardiff University Symphony Orchestra, one of a range of ensembles run by the School, has a distinguished history of contributing to musical life in South Wales and providing exciting performance opportunities for young musicians.
