About

Two classic recordings by Karajan while he was in London as the guest of Walter Legge, founder of the Philharmonia Orchestra. The two Sibelius symphonies form a lavish but unusual combination – Symphony No.2, the most popular of the seven created by the composer of Valse Triste, and his curious Symphony No.4, a violent, arid, anti-Malherian dissertation infused with doubt and melancholy. Two paradoxical masterworks.

Recording venues & dates:
- Symphony No.2: Kingsway Hall, London, March 1960
- Symphony No.4: Kingsway Hall, London, July 1953
