About
This collection begins with the 1982 Glassworks, the first album Glass made after signing with CBS Records. For that period in Glass’s career, it was a startlingly concise piece in six movements that was intended, as Glass himself put it, “to introduce my music to a more general audience than had been familiar with it up to then.” Since then, the music of Philip Glass has not only filled concert halls and opera houses, but it’s been the soundtrack to Hollywood films and Broadway dramas. “Floe,” from Glassworks, even underscored a rather elegant advertisement broadcast during America’s 2012 Super Bowl game. Glass’s recordings have been remixed by the likes of Beck, Amon Tobin, Tyondai Braxton and Jóhann Jóhannsson; he’s been imitated, emulated and parodied, most famously – and with clear affection – by the creators of the cartoon series South Park. One can hear, or maybe simply feel, the music of Philip Glass in the rush of modern life, on our urban streets and superhighways, and, equally, in those rare serene moments away from it all, when the only sound might be the hypnotic ebb and flow of waves or the slow and steady transit of wind through trees.
The box set includes three albums produced by Philip Glass himself for Columbia Masterworks - the first release of Glassworks (specially mixed for your personal cassette player) on CD, a 44-minute interview with Philip Glass on Glassworks and the OST to Nagoygatsi featuring Yo-Yo Ma. A booklet with the original linear notes, most penned by Glass himself plus full discographical notes and complete libretti. Facsimilie LP sleeves and notes.
