About

One of the most renowned classical music conductors of the twentieth century, Herbert von Karajan (1908-1989), born in Austria, was in charge of the Berlin Philharmonic for 35 years. A dominant figure in European classical music from the mid-1950s until his death, Karajan recorded prolifically and was the topselling classical music recording artist of all time, having sold an estimated 200 million records. This release presents Karajan’s 1959 LP 1812 (Columbia – 33CX 1517), which presents the Philharmonia Orchestra in a selection of well known Romantic pieces by various composers: Tchaikovsky, Lizst, Berlioz, Sibelius, and Weber. Further compositions by the three latter musicians recorded by Karajan during the same period have been added here as a bonus.
