Herbert von KarajanAbout
29-CD limited edition featuring the complete sacred and choral recordings that Herbert von Karajan made throughout his illustrious recording career on Deutsche Grammophon.
Multiple recordings of certain core repertoire offer the opportunity to experience the maestro’s artistic development over three decades.
Landmark performances by some of the greatest singers of the 20th century, including Barbara Hendricks, Gundula Janowitz, Christa Ludwig, Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, Hermann Prey, Peter Schreier, Fritz Wunderlich & Mirella Freni.
Highlights include three recordings of Mozart’s Requiem (1961/75/86), and two recordings each of: Brahms’s Ein deutsches Requiem (64/83), Beethoven’s Missa solemnis (66/85), Haydn’s Die Schöpfung (66/82) and Verdi’s Messa da Requiem (72/84).
Bonus: Haydn’s Die Schöpfung, recorded live at the Salzburg Festival in 1965
- Original jacket art (front and back)
- 88+4 page booklet with new liner notes by leading Karajan biographer Richard Osborne
“One of the signs of a great piece of music is that it will never come to the end of interpretation. It is like a deep well. You can dip and dip and never come to the end of it.” - Karajan
“He had a very, very profound sense of pulse which is what people tend to forget about his work - he had a devastatingly strong rhythmic impulse that was underneath it. And that's why he was often able to conduct in such a very, very smooth way but yet keep the pulse underneath it.” - Simon Rattle
