About

Born in 1924, the Hungarian violinist Johanna Martzy is in a class by herself! Revered and admired by afficionados around the world, collectors fight over her comparatively rare discographic material.

Martzy is still largely unknown to a broader public, but quite unjustly so as this box of 11 original albums from the time of her meteoric world career in the fifties shows. It includes highlights of the history of recorded music, among them striking examples of her interpretive art, Bach’s solo sonatas, concerts by Brahms, Dvorak, Mendelssohn and Mozart as well as chamber music by Schubert, Beethoven and Mozart. Her unique tone, sensual and singing, her self-confident renouncement of any violinistic ornamentation and her stylistic intelligence can also be admired by listening to the many bonus recordings with works by Mozart, de Falla, Milhaud, Szymanowski and Mendelssohn.
