About

On his debut ATMA recording, Québécois pianist Jean-Philippe Sylvestre revives André Mathieu’s Concerto de Québec alongside Rachmaninov’s colossal Piano Concerto No.2. This album features the Orchestre Métropolitain under Alain Trudel, and was recorded live during the 2017 Festival Classica.

Jean-Philippe Sylvestre performs regularly in Canada, the United States, South America, and Europe. In 2016, he won the Conseil des Arts du Québec’s residency in Paris. Famous conductor Yannick Nézet-Séguin qualifies Sylvestre as a “poet of the piano”.

Born in Ste-Julie, Québec, Jean-Philippe Sylvestre started his musical studies at the age of four. He is a graduate of the École de musique Vincent-d’Indy and the University of Montreal where he obtained a bachelor with Marc Durand. In 2005, he obtained an Artist Diploma from The Glenn Gould Professional School of The Royal Conservatory of Music of Toronto under the tutelage of John Perry. He has studied many years in Italy at the International Accademia Pianistica ‘’Incontri col Maestro’’ and in Germany under the direction of Louis Lortie, and he has followed intensive coaching with Michel Dalberto, Jacques Rouvier, Gerhard Oppitz, and Jerome Lowenthal. Jean-Philippe Sylvestre is a Fellowship Recipient of the 2009 Music Academy of the West. He is also a 2006 RBC Youth Excellence Scholarship Recipient for The Banff Centre Music Festival as well as a Fellowship Recipient of the 2004 Aspen Music Festival and School. Mr. Sylvestre has been several times recipient of perfectionnement scholarships from the Canada Council for the Arts and from the Québec Council for the Arts.

Founded in Montreal in 1981 by some of the finest music graduates from Québec conservatories and music faculties, the Orchestre Métropolitain now numbers about 60 professional musicians. From the very outset, the Orchestre Métropolitain adopted a wide public approach that focused on broadening audiences for classical music. Since 2000, the Orchestre Métropolitain has enjoyed a string of successes under the direction of its conductor Yannick Nézet-Séguin. The Orchestre Métropolitain has developed a unique approach founded on an unshakeable determination to democratize classical music by bringing it to people in their neighborhoods. Since its inception, the Orchestre Métropolitain has made a priority of introducing people to classical music and breaking down economic barriers with a policy that makes tickets affordable to everyone. The Orchestre Métropolitain is also a byword for very high quality entertainment and an invitation to enjoymusical culture through preconcert talk, and through its conductor who discusses each of the works on the programme.
