About

Colleagues and critics were in agreement: Váša Příhoda (1900-1960) was technically infallible as a violin virtuoso, Ruggiero Ricci went so far as to call him the “absolute violinist”. He had received his first lesson at his father’s music school, and at the age of thirteen was already on stage in Prague performing the concertos of Beethoven and Brahms.

He matured from Wunderkind to international star, comparable only to Heifetz and Kreisler. He arranged numerous works and composed new ones for his instrument. From 1939 on he led master classes at the Salzburg Mozarteum, from 1950 on he taught at the Vienna Conservatory. Příhoda’s postwar appearance in Hamburg made an “unforgettable impression” on the music critic Ingo Harden. Above all, we owe certain radio stations the resounding evidence of the quality of this artist; in addition to recordings from the early years of the gramophone, they are at the centre of this unique documentation.
