About

Neville Marriner served as conductor of the Stuttgart Radio Symphony Orchestra from 1983 to 1989, succeeding Sergiu Celibidache. His easy-going, genial conducting style contrasted with Celibidache's more brooding, charismatic approach. Under Marriner's direction, the orchestra’s playing became light and flexible, more agile than probing, and he increasingly focused on repertoire that went beyond the baroque and classical periods. This compilation offers a programme that music lovers won't usually associate with Marriner: German romanticism, including all of Schumann’s symphonies, Richard Strauss, Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninov, Mahler, Bartók and Gershwin. Listening to the excellent, fresh performances he draws from the orchestra, the lasting impression one has is of how sympathetic is Marriner’s music-making, a fitting epitaph for his entire life’s work.
