About

First publication of all of the famous Beethoven sonatas in a CD box. A pure listening pleasure from “Appassionata” to “Kreutzer Sonata”, they feature Wilhelm Kempff and Wolfgang Schneiderhan in top form. They’re recordings that still set the standard to this day.

Next to the symphonies, Beethoven’s piano works can be seen as his greatest musical legacy. All of the piano sonatas and the sonatas for piano and violin are presented in this CD box for the first time - an artistic document of the highest order. The pianist Wilhelm Kempff and his violin partner Wolfgang Schneiderhan have shaped the European concert life, especially in the second half of the 20th century. Wilhelm Kempff set new standards with his Beethoven recordings.

“Under Kempff’s hands, the seemingly mysterious surface of the classically sealed Beethoven gains magic,” wrote the important piano expert Joachim Kaiser about the sonatas. And in the comprehensive standard work “Pianisten Profile” (Bärenreiter Verlag), the authors Harden and Willmes state: “Hardly any pianist of the 20th century had such an unmistakable musical profile” as Wilhelm Kempff. The recordings of the piano sonatas collected in this CD box are “indispensable Kempff documents” according to these authors. Clearly, the value and quality of these recordings cannot be overestimated.
