About

"In 1970 I had just finished my Ninth Symphony and I was in a cheerful but slightly ironical mood. I started by Fourth Piano Concerto with the idea of doing something quite different from the first three, which were all deep, serious works. I used a smaller orchestra with only woodwinds in pairs, three horns, two trumpets, two trombones, one percussion player and strings. The first movement alternates between jerky, rhythmic sections and a long singing tune. The second movement is the key to the whole works; the main melody is a development of one of the ideas of the first movement. The finale is lively and bright with the coloring mostly in a high key." - George Lloyd

"... Lloyd sounds like Lloyd and no one else. His music is colorful, tuneful... and usually optimistic (although at times movingly melancholy). It has great audience appeal... Albany Records' sound is stunning.... Recommended with enthusiasm."
- Fanfare
