About

A year has passed since the untimely death of Icelandic composer Jóhann Jóhannsson.

In tribute to an exceptional artist and musical storyteller, Deutsche Grammophon is set to release a two-volume selection of his most important works.

RETROSPECTIVE I is as a deluxe hardcover book edition, with seven albums featuring Jóhannsson’s earlier works, including his previously unreleased soundtrack to the documentary White Black Boy. All seven albums will now be made available on the Yellow Label.

Born in Iceland, Jóhann Jóhannsson (1969–2018) was an award-winning composer, musician and producer. Often blending electronics with classical orchestrations, his work bears the diverse influences of the Baroque, Minimalism, and drone-based and electro-acoustic music.

“In his lifetime, Jóhannsson was a composer of extraordinary sensitivity, an artist whose fierce intelligence and refusal to tell his audience what to think made many of his peers, in the words of Portishead musician and composer Geoff Barrow, ‘realise their shit was stock’.” – Dazed (UK)
