The album’s title track, celebrated African-American composer Michael Abels’ Winged Creatures, was commissioned for the project by Cedille Records. Inspired by the flight of butterflies and other creatures, its solo parts are, in turns, delicate, frenetic, soaring, and powerful. The orchestra originally commissioned Joel Puckett’s Concerto Duo for a 2012 concert with the McGill brothers. The work evokes family affection and sibling camaraderie. Franz Danzi’s virtuosic and elegant Sinfonia Concertante for Flute, Clarinet and Orchestra, op.41, is a tour de force of late-Classical charm. Saint-Saëns’ youthful, virtuosic Tarantelle, op.6, draws inspiration from a southern Italian folk dance. It is something of a signature piece for the McGills, who performed the piano-accompanied version on Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood when the brothers were 18 and 14, respectively.
The McGills are among the few African-Americans who’ve held first-chair positions in major American orchestras. Other notable alumni of the CYSO Symphony Orchestra include Cedille recording artist Rachel Barton Pine, American indie-rock star Andrew Bird, performance artist Laurie Anderson, Royal Danish Orchestra concertmaster Emma Steele, Cleveland Orchestra principal oboist Frank Rosenwein, Boston Symphony Orchestra assistant principal cellist Martha Babcock, and Berlin Philharmonic violist Allan Nilles, to name a few. On the recording, the CYSO’s Symphony Orchestra is led by its current music director, Allen Tinkham.
Anthony and Demarre McGill’s previous joint appearance on Cedille Records was the McGill/McHale Trio’s irresistible debut album, Portraits, with Irish pianist Michael McHale. Classical Voice of North America called it “a thoughtfully assembled album ... that’s sure to win them many new friends.” American Record Guide praised the McGill brothers for their “stunningly clear and resonant woodwind timbres, exquisite balance and blend, sensitive phrasing, and expert technique.”
Portraits was featured on Minnesota Public Radio, SiriusXM Satellite Radio, Chicago’s WFMT, Louisville’s WUOL, and other outlets. San Francisco classical flagship KDFC-FM promoted a download of the trio’s version of Rachmaninov’s Vocalise to its listeners.
