About
The orchestral suite The Planets, written from 1914–16, remains Gustav Holst’s most successful composition. And justifiably so: his work takes a wide variety of musical influences from its time and moulds them into a style at once irresistibly new and unmistakably personal: hints of early Stravinsky, plus Vaughan Williams, Dukas and Debussy, but also Elgar and English folk music, are audible throughout. This style results in a work that is simultaneously musically sophisticated and popular. According to a verified anecdote, during the dress rehearsal of Jupiter before its première, the cleaning ladies in the concert hall broke out dancing. This style would go on to influence a whole generation of film score composers, particularly in the science fiction genre.
Notwithstanding the oft-mentioned differences between German and French (musical) culture, several of the most prominent settings of Goethe originated in France, including dramatic works by Berlioz, Gounod and Massenet. Paul Dukas’s 1897 symphonic poem The Sorcerer’s Apprentice (L’Apprenti sorcier) is not a setting but is nonetheless Goethe-inspired music in the form of a scherzo for orchestra. The piece is equal parts brilliant and malicious, and is a favourite among orchestras; it is often played, especially in the USA.
In August 2017, hd-klassik, Cybele Records’ sister company, announces the expansion of its audiophile offerings with an additional exquisite physical product: the 3D Binaural Series. Every SACD in this innovative 3D Binaural Series contains a 3D Binaural Stereo recording realized in a very purist manner with only two microphones and without any filters or effects.
