About
Among the better-known pieces there is some characterful Grovlez and Bozza, serious Schumann, Rubbra's intense Duo and some effervescent Saint-Saëns. Among the lesser-known pieces, there is a folk-like Watersmeet from Lamont Kennaway and a Charakterstücke by Karl Goepfart.
Most extensive is the Poem by Marina Dranishnikova. She studied piano and composition at the Leningrad Conservatoire and wrote this piece in 1953. It is said to have been prompted by an unhappy love for an oboist. Whatever the origin, it is intense, beautiful, and unsettling music.

This disc of music for oboe/cor anglais and piano offers both sunniness and solemnity, levity and lament, in the form of varied repertory comprising some works which are accustomed to the spotlight and others which have dwelled in the shadows. ... Rubbra’s Duo for cor anglais and piano extends the yearning Romanticism of Schumann’s romance into the soul’s darker places; its slow steady tread does not prevent [Jonathan] Pease communicating a sometimes turbulent unease but this is balanced by the lyricism of [Nicola] Hands’ cor anglais rovings.
