About

Horn player Louis-Philippe Marsolais devotes an entire album to chamber music for horn by German composer Paul Hindemith (1895-1963). He is joined by pianist David Jalbert, Pentačdre wind ensemble, and horn players from the National Arts Centre Orchestra in Ottawa.

One of the key figures in music of the interwar period, Paul Hindemith was an avant-garde composer, remarkable violinist and violist, conductor, and outstanding theorist and pedagogue. At times calm and introspective or complex and tumultuous, his riveting music is too seldom performed nowadays.

This unfortunate reality has given birth to our recording project honouring chamber music for horn by one of the most prodigious composers of the 20th century.

Canada’s most active horn soloist, Montreal based Louis-Philippe Marsolais, has performed on stages all over the world. He has been principal horn of the Orchestre Metropolitain since 2009 and a frequent player with Les Violons du Roy and the I Musici de Montreal Chamber Orchestra. He is also very active as a chamber musicia and performs with Pentaedre wind quintet throughout the world.

His numerous solo, chamber music and orchestral recordings, mostly for ATMA Classique, have all received unanimous praise and many awards. His most recent CD, Mozart Horn Concertos, received an Opus Prize for best classical, romantic, post-romantic and impressionist album of 2018.
