About
On the album, we find music from the heart of the 20th century, composed by artists associated with Central and Eastern Europe. The Fourth Sonata for violin and piano by Grażyna Bacewicz was written in 1949, shortly after the war. The war's shadow can still be observed in the composition, kept in the neoclassical style. Despite a perfect discipline, typical of Bacewicz, there are also sections brimming with emotions, neatly blended into an impeccable form.
A similar impression of even greater emotionality and tragedy is evoked by the Sonata no.1 in F minor, op.80, by Sergei Prokofiev, written in 1936–1946, a work full of contrasts, with fragments of a heroic nature, yet perfectly balanced in terms of form.
The last of the pieces presented on the album is Fratres for violin and piano by Arvo Pärt from 1977. The composer has created many versions of this piece, yet the 'classic' combination of violin and keys seems to be particularly interesting here in comparison with its transparent structure and the tone colours used.
