The performance of Richard Strauss’s Tod und Verklärung underlines Kempe’s authority in this music with the added adrenalin that a ‘live’ concert produces.
The Penguin Guide wrote of Kempe’s live performance of Dvořák’s Symphony no.9, ‘This is a quite exceptional account, the most illuminating and compelling to have appeared for some years’. The highly intense performance of Dvořák’s Symphony no.8 played here is simply stunning and has the audience on its feet.
