About

Although primarily remembered today as a distinguished teacher at the University of Southern California, where she remained for half a century, Eudice Shapiro was one of the most multifaceted violinists of the 20th century. She studied with Efrem Zimbalist at the Curtis Institute, and was the first violinist of the American Art Quartet. She was also the first female leader in the Hollywood studios, serving as concertmistress for both Paramount and RKO from the mid-1940s to the early 1960s. This release showcases Eudice Shapiro playing a Mozart Concerto (her only recording of a major concerto) and a variety of short pieces, including two popular songs by Victor Young: Je vous adore and Stella by Starlight. As demonstrated on this recording, not only was Shapiro comfortable performing in a variety of different musical genres from the classical concerto to popular show tunes, but she could also adapt her sound and playing style to suit each to perfection.
