About

In 1824, Schubert wrote to his friend Leopold Kupelwiser that he wanted to “pave his way to the great symphony”. After much struggle, these efforts bore fruit. In 1825, he completed his Symphony No.8. Robert Schumann, an admirer of the piece spoke of its “heavenly lengths”, but also noticed something far more important, namely, “the complete independence of the symphony from those by Beethoven”. He had realized that the importance of this symphony went beyond its era. Indeed this “epic” expansion would not reappear before Bruckner and Mahler.

Jonathan Nott
and his Bamberg forces complete their highly regarded survey of Schubert’s Symphonies with this huge work.
