About

The highly-talented young Russian conductor Tugan Sokhiev is here joined by the well-known French actress Valérie Lemercier in a charming new French language version of Prokofiev’s children’s piece for orchestra and narrator, “Pierre at le Loup” (Peter and the Wolf). The disc also features works by Liadov and Rimsky-Korsakov.

The young Tugan Sokhiev has established a strong presence as a guest conductor and took up the position as Principal Guest Conductor and Artistic Adviser of the Orchestre National du Capitole de Toulouse at the beginning of the 2005/6 season. A former student of Musin and later Temirkanov, he graduated from the St Petersburg Conservatoire in 2001. He made his Welsh National Opera debut in 2001 conducting 'La bohème', followed by a number of further productions, including a notable Eugene Onegin in Spring 2004. He now conducts many works for the Mariinsky Theatre, including regular new productions. He made his first recording with the Orchestre National du Capitole de Toulouse, a critically-acclaimed CD of Tchaikovsky’s Fourth Symphony and Mussorgsky 'Pictures at an Exhibition', in Summer 2006.

The well-known French actress Valérie Lemercier has a passion for the story and music of Peter and the Wolf to the point of possessing every recording of it. On this new CD, along with her new narration of the story in French, she has adapted the fairy tales that inspired a number of Russian pieces which Tugan Sokhiev has selected, and they serve as introductions to each piece.  This delightful new release is presented in limited edition book form which includes all the texts and drawings by Valérie Lemercier herself.
