About

Swiss composer Frank Martin (1890-1974) spent much of his career in the Netherlands where the rarely recorded works on this CD were written. Martin developed his mature style based on a very personal use of Schoenberg’s 12-tone technique, having become interested in this around 1932, but did not abandon tonality. In fact his preference for lean textures and his habitual rhythmic vehemence are very far from Schoenberg's hyper-romanticism. Martin’s touchstone was Bach’s St Mathew Passion and its influence shines through these radiant pieces.

Muriel Cantoreggi soars over two string orchestras in the Polyptique and answers the beautiful soprano of Juliane Banse in the moving Maria-Tripytchon.

German-born but Swiss-bred Juliane Banse is still only in her mid-thirties but has become one of the leading sopranos of our time. Her many CDs include Brahms duets with her former teacher Brigitte Fassbaender and three for ECM.

French born violinist Muriel Cantoreggi has been leader of the Munich Chamber Orchestra since 1995. She made her ECM debut as a soloist on Barry Guy’s Folio (476 3053).

The German Radio Philharmonic Orchestra has been formed through a merger of the Radio Symphony Orchestra Saarbrücken (to which Poppen was appointed in 2006 following his 11 years with the Munich Chamber Orchestra) and the Rundfunkorchester Kaiserslautern.
