The canzonas follow the scheme of variation canzona. The subject returns in a rhythmically varied guise in each section, creating a justaposition of the sections as they follow one other in an alteration of binary and ternary meters, moderate tempos and lively dotted figures; the whole is interspersed whith toccata-like adagio passages which serve to unite the contrasting parts.
