Gustave Kerker was a genuine great in the genre of popular theatre. Although largely forgotten today, he had a successful career in America, England and Germany.
Burning to Sing is a parody of grand, tragic opera, presented as a one-act drama. This is a highly amusing satiric piece with death arias, crude plots and a suitably melodramatic orchestral accompaniment.
In 1898 The Belle of New York was a celebrated triumph in London at the Shaftesbury Theatre. It enjoyed a remarkable 697 performances.
