Otto Olsson was one of the greatest virtuoso organists of his time. He displays a particular affinity for the French organ, and choral and instrumental compositions were caracterised both by an interest in Gregorian Chant and by incursions into polytonality.
The Symphonie Romane by Widor takes its inspiration from the romanesque Basilica of St Sernin in Toulouse and its famed Cavaillé-Coll organ, and is based on the Gradual “Haec dies” from the Mass for Easter Sunday.
Georges Athanasiadès has been the organist titular for over sixty years in Saint-Maurice where the remarkable organ is the perfect instrument for these symphonic masterpieces.
