About

These Sonatas were written between 1830 and 1843 by Giovanni Morandi (1777-1856), one of the most important Italian composers for organ music of the 19th century. Morandi was born in Pergola, a small town in the Marches region and he was a close colleague and friend of Gioacchino Rossini. According to biographer Giuseppe Radiciotti, Morandi played an instrumental part in Rossini’s debut as on opera writer.

The originality of this music lies in the pieces being for organ 4 hands, a great rarity in the Italian Organ repertoire. These pieces are preserved in the monastery of Santa Cristina in Senigallia, and form part of a group of 16 compositions for 4 hands, ten of which are dedicated to two skilled organ-playing nuns: Anna Costante Cacciari and Candida Colomba Loreti.
