Denny DennisAbout
Retrospective’s centenary tribute to Ronald Dennis Pountain (1913-1993), otherwise “Denny Dennis”, draws attention to one of the last century’s very finest popular vocalists. If his name doesn’t trip off the tongue as readily as, say, Crosby, Como or Sinatra, the 53 tracks of 'I’ll Sing You A Thousand Love Songs' demonstrate his right to be counted among such company – he was so much more than “Britain’s Bing Crosby”.
From his first sessions with Jack Jackson, we follow his hugely successful career as star vocalist with the dance bands of Roy Fox and Ambrose, when he rivalled Al Bowlly in popularity. Post-War we follow him to the USA where Tommy Dorsey, no less, chose him to step into the shoes of Frank Sinatra and Dick Haymes. Cruel timing meant that Dennis’ period coincided with a year-long Musicians’ Union recording ban, after which circumstances forced him to return from fame to the UK and to relative obscurity.
We hear some of his first-class 50s work with Sid Phillips and for the Woolworths Embassy label.
Denny Dennis may have been denied the greatest fame, but our tribute shows that he was nevertheless one of the true greats.
