One of the most recognisable and popular works in the choral repertoire, Carmina Burana is full of infectious tunes and colourful orchestration. The opening ‘O Fortuna’ is familiar to many from its use in numerous TV programmes, adverts and films.
This live concert recording captures the drama of the 2013 performance at Royal Festival Hall: part of Southbank Centre’s year-long 'The Rest Is Noise' festival.
Conductor Hans Graf (former Music Director of the Houston Symphony Orchestra and a frequent guest conductor with the major US and European orchestras) delivers a commanding interpretation and, with three outstanding soloists a live performance full of adrenalin.
British soprano Sarah Tynan is much sought-after on both the opera and concert stage. She has recorded roles in several of the Chandos ‘Opera in English’ series. The press noted of her performance here in Carmina Burana that she ‘had just the right sweetness of tone to give the final “Courtly Love” scene the sensuous quality it needs.’
British tenor Andrew Kennedy is very much part of the LPO family. Past engagements with the Orchestra have included Beethoven’s Symphony No.9, Berlioz’s 'Grande Messe des Morts', Mozart’s 'Requiem' and Haydn’s 'The Seven Last Words of Our Saviour On the Cross'.
Bass-baritone Rodion Pogossov is in great demand on the concert stage, as well as appearing regularly in operas at the Metropolitan Opera in New York and the Hamburgische Staatsoper in Germany. In 2014 he makes his debut at Los Angeles Opera as Papageno in The Magic Flute.
