About
American sisters Patty (1918-2013), Maxene (1916-1995) and LaVerne (1911-1967) Andrews constituted the most popular female vocal group of them all. Their unmistakable sound helped define the Forties era and, from 1937 to 1952, they enjoyed no fewer than 113 hit records!
Retrospective’s 'Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy' offers the finest available 2-disc survey of their fabulous career, with the sisters’ 54 very best tracks. There are no fewer than 37 Top 20 hits, 18 of them reaching one, two or three. Among the biggest million sellers are Shoo-Shoo Baby, Rum And Coca-Cola, Near You and Toolie Oolie Doolie.
The sisters enjoyed an incredibly successful partnership with ‘The Old Groaner’ himself, Bing Crosby, six top examples of which are included: Don’t Fence Me In, South America Take it Away, Is You Is Or Is You Ain't My Baby?, Pistol Packin’ Mama, and so on – not forgetting they also made a superb version of Begin The Beguine backed by Bing’s brother, Bob Crosby.
They also had a great partner for the sardonic No.3 hit Civilisation, duetting with Danny Kaye, and made memorable recordings in partnership with Les Paul, Carmen Miranda, Burl Ives and Al Jolson.
The Andrews Sisters may now be history – the youngest, Patty, died last year at the age of 94 – yet their popularity has not waned, and they retain their status as top icons of the Swing Era.
