About

Edward Woodall Naylor (1867–1934) was Organist of Emmanuel College, Cambridge, from 1898 until his death.

Apart from his well-known anthem Vox dicentis: Clama and a few canticle settings, very little of his music is in the repertoire of choirs today, and this recording presents a wide range of unknown choral works.

This is the first recording entirely devoted to his choral works, and, appropriately, is sung by the present-day Choir of Emmanuel College, Cambridge, directed by Richard Latham, in their first recording on the Regent label.

In addition to Vox dicentis, the Morning and Evening canticles in A, and the Benedicte in G, this new recording contains seven first recordings, and forms an ideal introduction to the composer’s sacred choral works.

A delightful and engaging survey through some unknown backwaters of Victorian and Edwardian sacred choral music!

In addition to full notes on the music and texts, the CD booklet includes an extended essay on the life and works of E W Naylor by the Revd Canon Raymond Hockley (1929–2012), who was Chaplain of Emmanuel College, Cambridge (1968–76), and subsequently Precentor of York Minster (1976–95). The essay is an extract from the author’s planned publication 'Edward Naylor, Composer, Performer and Scholar', which remained incomplete and unpublished at the time of his death.
