About

Alfred Bruneau was born in Paris in 1857. His education followed a conventional path, taking him to the Paris Conservatoire, where he studied with both Massenet and Franck. He began work on his Requiem in 1884 but it only received its first performance more than 10 years later, on the 25th February 1896 at the Queen's Hall in London, performed by the London Bach Choir under the baton of Charles Villiers Stanford.

Chronologically, Bruneau's Requiem comes between those of Saint-Saens and Gounod and precedes his first opera, Kerim, thus making it his first important work.
