OxalysAbout
The 1914-18 collection draws a musical picture of the Great War years, thanks to recordings of both the erudite and the popular musical pieces that emerged at a time when all art seemed pointless but could bring comfort nonetheless, for a concert or an evening, to civilians and soldiers of Belgium and beyond. This first volume of the collection features Georges Antoine’s chamber music.
The soldier musician (as Vincent d’Indy called him) enlisted as a volunteer in August 1914. Sent to the front, his health deteriorated rapidly and he was discharged in May 2015. He settled in Bretagne, where he composed music and arranged concerts.
In September 1918, still sick, he voluntarily went back to the front. Transferred to La Panne, his health worsened and he died at Bruges on 15 November 1918. Most of his works were composed during the war years.
