Mahler's Symphony No.5 is particularly famous for its overwhelming adagietto, popularised by the film 'Death in Venice' by Luchino Visconti. The full range of Mahlerian symphonic colours is here displayed by the Orchestre National Bordeaux Aquitaine at its best, under the inspired baton of Paul Daniel.
British conductor Paul Daniel was named music director of the Orchestre National Bordeaux Aquitaine from the 2013-14 season, succeeding Kwamé Ryan. He conducts a minimum of 16 weeks a year with one opera each season for Opéra National de Bordeaux. The former music director of English National Opera combines his role in Bordeaux with his responsibilities as principal conductor and artistic director of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra of Galicia in Santiago de Compostela, a position he took up in January 2013.
