About
Ricercar now celebrates its 35th anniversary with a homage to the greatest Flemish composer of the Renaissance. The works of Cipriano de Rore (1515/16 – 1565) remained extremely popular until well after his death. Several of his madrigals later appeared in dozens of ornamented versions and continued to do so until the beginning of the 17th century - this was an extraordinary success for the time.
Ricercar’s leading ensembles of singers and instrumentalists have each made their own original contribution to this recording, providing a complete overview of de Rore’s sacred and secular works. The madrigal Ancor che col partire binds the entire recording together, firstly through the original setting with its erotically charged text and secondly through many instrumental versions that were soon made from it.
In this, our thirty-fifth anniversary year, as we continue to hear about the supposedly inevitable decline of recordings as we know it, this project alone dares to believe that recording is not dead - it is still able to provide a medium for the unusual works that have created its specific identity and educative values, for such works promote both curiosity and the creation of a musical consciousness.
Ricercar’s philosophy and artistic policies continue unchanged. These bear their fruits in its recordings - wonderfully illuminated pages of a vast History of Early Music.
Artists include Vox Luminis, Clematis, L’Achéron, Choeur de Chambre de Namur, Cappella Mediterranea, Jean Tubery and Bernard Foccroulle.

Europadisc Review
De Rore (or simply 'Cipriano', as he was widely known) was born in 1515/16 in the bilingual border region between the Flanders and Wallonia in present day Belgium. Like many of his musical compatriots, he spent most of his career in Italy as one of the so-called fiamminghi, working mainly in Venice, Ferrara and Parma, where he died in September 1565. One of the most celebrated composers of his time, Cipriano wrote prolifically in sacred and secular genres, but it is for his four- and five-voice madrigals that he is best known today.
Masterminded by Ricercar label founder Jérôme Lejeune, this new disc of specially recorded performances focuses on one madrigal in particular, Ancor che col partire (Although, as I leave, I feel myself die), whose expressive music and erotically-charged subtext earned it hit status in the 16th century. As well as the madrigal itself, the disc is interweaved with instrumental arrangements of it by a number of Cipriano's contemporaries, vividly illustrating the huge range of 'diminution' techniques: decorative vocal or instrumental elaborations of frequently virtuosic nature. There are other madrigals too, as well as further sacred and secular items, even including an eight-part French chanson, Mon petit cueur.
The majority of these performances are by voices and instruments, or instruments alone, and it is the sheer variety of combinations that makes this disc so very attractive. Highlights include Cappella Mediterranea's performances of Ancor che col partire and Non è ch'il duol me scemi, with Mariana Flores's plangent but sensuous soprano especially memorable; Ensemble Clematis's harp and theorbo contributions (tracks 5 and 7); the gorgeously mellow bass viols and violone of L'Achéron in the secular motet Calami sono ferentes (track 14); and the even more beguiling combination of Doulce Mémoire's four bassoons for Cabezon's arrangement of Ancor che col partire (track 16). Among all these instrumental riches, the two a cappella items stand out in bold relief: Vox Luminis are meltingly beautiful in Mon petit cueur (track 15), while the Namur Chamber Choir give a stunningly lovely performance of the seven-part Ave Regina (track 17).
This is a real cornucopia of musical delights, belying the rather stern image of Cipriano that gazes out from contemporary portraits. It's all curated with obvious love and expertise by Jérôme Lejeune, who provides a lengthy and engaging booklet note. He and his musicians deserve our congratulations, and they have done Cipriano proud.
