Eight of Mozart’s divinely inspired Piano Sonatas here receive performances of mercurial inspiration from consummate musician cum virtuoso-wizard Marc-André Hamelin. His four Haydn albums have enthralled - this new Mozart will not disappoint.
Two Rondos, a Fantasia, and a decidedly quirky Gigue complete a delight of a double album.

Europadisc Review
Hamelin uses a modern Steinway grand, but such is the sensitivity and lightness of touch that the instrument never stands in the way of stylish music-making. On the contrary, Hamelin brings such a range of colour to this music that the listener is left constantly marvelling at the variety of Mozart's invention.
It's a typically well-judged piece of programming that places the last Sonata, K576 in D, at the very beginning, its opening hunting figuration acting as a call-to-arms for the recital as a whole. Hamelin is fully alive to the close imitative figures, which crackle delightfully at a brisk speed. Tempi in the faster movements throughout are superbly judged: the F major Sonata, K332, for example, sounds relaxed enough at the opening, but the minor-key outbursts are full of bristling drama. In the slow movements there's an understated lyricism that allows the music's cantabile qualities room to breathe without ever sounding languorous. The opening Adagio to the E flat Sonata, K282, is surprisingly affecting in Hamelin's hands.
Pedalling is discreet and always at the service of the music, and the pianist is served well by an ideally-balanced recording in London's Henry Wood Hall. The sonatas alone would be enough to recommend this set, but there are tempting fillers too, including the lively and quirky Gigue in G, K574 (a Mozartian tribute to Bach), an achingly melancholic A minor Rondo, K511, and the D minor Fantasia, K397, with Hamelin presenting his own resolution for the ‘missing' ending.
With extensive, detailed booklet notes by Richard Wigmore, and two discs for the price of one, what's not to like? More soon, please!
