About
He is one of Sweden’s most personal trumpet players, whose manner of expression is as timeless as it is ever-modern. On this new CD 'Aspiration' we can also hear Peter Asplund in his rather lesser known role as jazz vocalist.
"I want to show my full spectrum of colours, for the first time letting the jazz trumpeter and the jazz singer-artist-entertainer live side by side", says Peter Asplund.
On 'Aspiration' he weaves the two threads together into a new, exciting whole. Just listen, for instance, to 'Meaning Of The Blues', 'Get Happy' and 'My Way' that feature the trumpet playing by which we recognize him, but then by way of contrast, he sings 'The Song Is You' in an up-tempo version (including some exciting scat vocal), and even the poignantly romantic 'Yesterday I Heard The Rain'.
It is music that has elements that are free, tranquil, powerful, melancholy, happy, explosive, pensive.....in other words dynamic – all characteristic of Peter Asplund’s musical world.
'Aspiration' took shape during a couple of intensive days in the studio. Outside, autumn storms were raging, but inside he engaged in open musical conversations over a dozen durable standards with pianist Jacob Christoffersen, bassist Hans Andersson, drummer Johan Löfcrantz Ramsay and tenor saxophonist Magnus Lindgren.
The result is ”Aspiration”, a full-sized portrait of Peter Asplund – today.
