About

Le Duc d’Albe stars the glorious American soprano Angela Meade, making her debut recording for Opera Rara. Joining Angela, and returning to Opera Rara following his astonishing performance on the label’s award-winning recording of Donizetti’s Les Martyrs, is tenor Michael Spyres, as well as Laurent Naouri, who recently sang on our recording of Gounod’s La Colombe.

Le Duc d’Albe was composed to a libretto by Eugène Scribe and Charles Duveyrier in 1839, but Donizetti set it aside after completing only two acts, never to return to the score. It is those two magnificent acts which are recorded here.

Reviews

... under Mark Elder’s propulsive baton, the highlights keep coming. There’s a strong duet for the Duke, leader of the Spanish oppressors, and Henri, the Flemish “orphan” hero whose father is, of course, hiding in plain sight; a patriotic chorus worthy of Verdi; and an emotionally wide-ranging scene for Henri and Hélène, the vengeful heroine who is holed up in a brewery – this is Belgium, after all. Michael Spyres’s clarion tenor shines throughout as Henri. Angela Meade’s soprano is squally in Hélène’s act one rabble-rousing, but commanding in all the right ways in act two, and Laurent Naouri and David Stout are excellent as the Duke and his snarling henchman.  Erica Jeal

This is one of the most exciting of Opera Rara’s Donizetti recordings. ... The several magnificent choruses are sung with gusto by the Opera Rara Chorus, and supported by a possessed Hallé Orchestra, Sir Mark Elder eliciting fervent and accurate performances from every last participant. The opera only has one female lead, but Angela Meade makes sure that her singing makes up for that by hurling herself into this heroic role, sounding in fact more at home when she is contemplating making war, not love.  Michael Tanner
