Pieter‐Jan BelderAbout
Fifty years ago, to mark the bicentenary of his death, a set which made a signal contribution to the appreciation of Telemann by an audience beyond scholars was the complete Tafelmusik, which received its first complete recording on period instruments from the Dutch recorder virtuoso Frans Brüggen and his Concerto Amsterdam. That set on Das alte Werk/Telefunken became an instant classic, and over the years sold many thousands of copies, perhaps far more than could ever have been anticipated for what was then a 6‐LP set of overtures, concertos and orchestral suites. A few years ago Brüggen’s compatriots in Musica Amphion turned their attention to Tafelmusik, and the set is now repackaged in a special anniversary edition.
The instrumentalists – one per part, as they were on the earlier recording – are no less renowned in their own era as were Brüggen’s musicians. Many of them pursue distinguished solo careers – including flautist Wilbert Hazelzet, violinist Rémy Baudet, cellists Richte van der Meer and Jaap ter Linden, and the oboists Frank de Bruine and Alfredo Bernardini. All have made significant contributions to the dissemination and understanding of Baroque and early music through performances and recordings with the most distinguished early‐music ensembles and conductors.
The value of this set was widely recognised on its original release. ‘I enjoyed the concertante aspects of these performances greatly; phrasing is unmannered and straightforward without becoming prosaic and they evince a true chamber intimacy in the Trios and Quartets. Characterisation of the various movements, whether Francophile or Vivaldian is acutely judged and the rewards are uniform – and lasting.’ - Musicweb International
‘Joining Belder as members of Musica Amphion are a number of longstanding Baroque period‐instrument ‘all‐stars’... Brilliant's sound is very good, with a slight but ever‐present focus on the soloists. Listeners who enjoy Baroque music though were previously reluctant to spring for one of Telemann's more epic productions now have no excuse to hold back. Recommended!’ - Classics Today
