About

Each volume of the Great Violins series traces the life of a famous string instrument: its history, recorded sound through the years and the artists who have owned it. The publication includes a panoramic view of the instrument with detailed Hi-Res colour pictures, a full-size poster with all the measurements, as well as a recent digital recording to  appreciate its current tone-colour qualities.

This issue is dedicated to the 1716 ‘Maréchal Berthier’ Strad given by Napoleon as a gift to his close friend the General Louis-Alexandre Berthier, Marshal of France, Prince of Neuchâtel and Valangin. A fascinating story, winding through the courts of Europe and, through various – the instrument also belonged to the violinist and composer Baron Ferenc von Vecsey – ending in our day.
