This album showcases the first release of the outstanding live recording by Argerich of one of her favourite concertos, Shostakovich’s Concerto for piano, trumpet and string orchestra in C minor, op.35. Argerich is joined by trumpeter Jakub Waszczeniuka and accompanied by her long-time musical collaborator Alexander Rabinovich-Barakovsky with the Sinfonia Varsovia. Rabinovich is responsible for coupling the Concerto with the light-spirited Symphony no.9.
The recording was made during the Chopin and His Europe International Music Festival, 19 August and 28 August 2006 at the Warsaw Philharmonic Concert Hall in Warsaw.
Reviews
At the end [of the concerto], the audience goes wild. As a bonus, the Polish recording gives us the second go-round of the antic finale, offered as an encore, if possible even more dazzling and hilariously droll than the first. ... I know of no other pianist who mines the First Concerto’s riches with her depth of understanding, yet delivers it with such consummate ease. Patrick Rucker
