Vikingur Olafsson (piano)About
As the unstoppable Nazi forces roll across Western Europe and the threat of invasion is imminent, and with an unprepared public, a skeptical King, and his own party plotting against him, Churchill must withstand his darkest hour, rally a nation, and attempt to change the course of world history.
Never change a winning team: Dario Marianelli and Joe Wright worked together on box office hit Pride and Prejudice (2005). When director Joe Wright heard Víkingur Ólafsson’s Glass interpretations, he immediately thought of him as the perfect pianist for Marianelli’s score.
Víkingur Ólafsson is an established Deutsche Grammophon newcomer, signed to DG in 2016 and wowing audiences with his debut album Philip Glass - Piano Works since then. Víkingur plays the music on this soundtrack, composed by Dario Marianelli.
“The craft on display in Darkest Hour, from top to bottom, is incredible, and composer Dario Marianelli—who already composed one iconic score with Wright for Atonement—outdoes himself here with a piano-driven soundtrack that is magnificent. It’s alternatively thrilling, somber, introspective, and gregarious, the latter reflecting Churchill’s demeanor in brilliant fashion.” – Collider
“Enter world-class soloist Vikingur Olafsson. The Icelandic pianist was “particularly versed in minimalism, with an expressiveness that wasn’t remotely romantic,” Marianelli says. He quickly expanded the scope of the score to be more fully orchestral.” – Variety
“The rousing score from Atonement Oscar winner Dario Marianelli becomes a character in itself.” – Entertainment Weekly
“Dario Marianelli adds a stirring score.” – USA Today
