About

“I wish that Quantz’s flute, which speaks more eloquently than Quantz himself, could tell you of all the feelings which stir in my heart for you, through the most delicate and moving notes, through the most poignant of adagios. The fire of his allegros is the living symbol of the joy I feel as soon as I am with you.” – Frederick the Great

From 1716 to1741 Johann Joachim Quantz lived and worked in Dresden. These 25 years proved to be a time of both self-reflection and growth that would carry him through the rest of his illustrious musical career. It was during this time that Quantz became acquainted with the works of Antonio Vivaldi, which made a very important impression on him, providing him with “good models” that he would later incorporate into his own work. Quantz was offered a position with the town band of Dresden in 1716 and enjoyed the rich artistic and international atmosphere of Dresden’s musical scene.

Flautist Eric Lamb is in demand internationally as a soloist, recitalist, concert curator and chamber musician. From 2007 to 2012, Eric performed extensively as a core member of the New York based International Contemporary Ensemble (ICE) and has been a guest with ensembles, orchestras and at major festivals throughout the US, South America, Germany, Holland and the UK. He continues to work closely with leading composers and conductors of our time while exploring performance techniques and practices throughout the entire scope of the repertoire, such as for recent recordings and editions of solo flute works by Johann Joachim Quantz and Johann George Tromlitz.

On this recording, Eric performs on a wooden flute by Sankyo Handmade Flutes.

Michael Alexander Willens, music director of Die Kölner Akademie, studied conducting with John Nelson at the Juilliard School in New York, where he received bachelor and master’s degrees. He has also studied with Leonard Bernstein at Tanglewood, as well as choral conducting with Paul Vorwerk. Willens’ broad experience has given him an unusual depth of background and familiarity with performance practice styles ranging from baroque, classical and romantic through to contemporary as well as jazz and pop music.

Die Kölner Akademie is a unique ensemble based in Cologne which performs music of the seventeenth through the twenty-first centuries on period instruments with world-renowned guest soloists. The ensemble seeks to bring out the composers’ intentions by using urtext editions, historically informed performance practice, and the proper number of performers for each work.
