Julius Baker, considered during his lifetime to be a flautist’s flautist, was renowned not only as a solo recitalist, but for his work as the solo flute of the New York Philharmonic (and prior to that, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra). Born in Cleveland, OH, Baker studied at the Curtis Institute of Music and began his career with the Cleveland Orchestra. His solo career began with a broadcast performance of the Ibert Flute Concerto, with the CBS Symphony Orchestra. Baker also was on the faculty at the Juilliard School of Music, having joined in 1954.
“Performance: Full-blooded. Recording: Splendid. These two suites… make a splendid pair, as is amply proved by this robust new recording. Julius Baker is, of course, a thoroughly seasoned musician, and his supple playing is fortified by a mellow maturity that lends depth to his interpretation. The Madeira Festival Orchestra… gives full-blooded, stylish support under the direction of Anthony Newman.” - Stereo Review
“…flute suites by Bach and Telemann are played with suave assurance by Julius Baker with the Madeira Festival Orchestra conducted by Anthony Newman…” - Paul Turok, Ovation
“He (Julius Baker) whips off the Bach (with its demonquick Badinerie) and the Telemann as if they presented no problems at all…” - Toronto Star
